  1. Instrument that measures atmospheric 
  2. pressure as an indication of weather.
  3. Most often used are the mercury barometer
  4. and the aneroid barometer. In a mercury
  5. barometer a column of mercury in a glass
  6. tube roughly 0.75 m/2.5 ft high (closed
  7. at one end, curved upwards at the other) is
  8. balanced by the pressure of the atmosphere on
  9. the open end; any change in the height of the
  10. column reflects a change in pressure. An
  11. aneroid barometer achieves a similar result
  12. by changes in the distance between the faces
  13. of a shallow cylindrical metal box which is
  14. partly exhausted of air.
